How to keep your employees happy?

Working in a healthy environment it’s the key for every successful and long-lasting industry, having happy employees who have a good relationship with each other and with the employer creates a serene organizational climate. But what are the elements that contribute to the creation and permanence of happiness in the work environment?

What’s “happiness”?

To understand how to obtain a happier workplace first we must understand what the concept of happiness means, so we can achieve in the real life the abstract elements of this feeling. We know that when we are happy, we feel a sort of freedom in our spirit and mind and usually this term is associated with facial expressions as the smile, with colors as yellow (or any bright color) or with the climate weather, as a bright sky.

As a feeling we can imagine this word as a state of contentment, for example when we finish a hard job that we are proud of or when we achieve something that at first seemed impossible. That’s how we have to imagine a happy workplace: a bright and serene space where people feel free and satisfied.

Try to imagine a place where all of this happens, we can think of our home, a place where we feel free to express ourselves and to do whatever we want, a place that we can manipulate in order to feel satisfied and determined to do anything. Any work environment should let the employees feel as if they were in their personal home.

How to have a happier workplace?

Let’s think about our employees and try to put ourselves in their shoes. If I was an employee, I would like to wake up in the morning and be motivated to go to work, because I see it as a place that motivates me to do my best in every single task, it rewards me when I do great, but it also pushes me to correct and improve myself without making me feel wrong.

We usually think at the work as something mandatory in order to survive and have a good life, but this concept leads people to think of it as a must, with the consequence that they will feel any job as a pressure that they will hate more and more. For this reason, people should be hired not only based on their knowledge, but also on the basis of their interests and hobbies.

In this way a person who is interested in informatics, for example, will not think of their job as something mandatory, but as a sort of hobby that also pays him, and he will be more motivated and happy to go to work every single day for multiple years, especially if the work environment gives him tranquility and by that I’m referring to the concept before: reward the employees when they do great and motive them to get better without making them feel wrong.

How can a job bring happiness?

We can also relate pressure to the limitation that employees have. Usually, a job occupies most of your time so at the end of the day or of the week every person will feel exhausted and won’t spend their free time to cultivate a dream or a passion, of course an employer needs people’s time to maintain his company and cannot pay an employee for doing nothing.

On the other hand, a job doesn’t need that much time to be completed and even if we reduce the working schedule for each employee the life and success of the industry won’t finish. An important element that can bring happiness in every work environment is the freedom that an employee can have in the organization of his time.

Every person must have the responsibility to organize his working schedule and also to be free to have enough time for himself, that’s why each employee should decide when to work and when to finish, of course respecting the weekly schedule given by the employer and the deadline of every task. In this way no one will see their own job as an imposition that they detest.

An employer as a new best friend

Another key for a happier workplace is a good relationship between employees and employer. Many people are afraid of expressing themselves and their personal requests, on the other hand many employers have a dictatorial behavior, and they feel as if they were on an upper-level instilling fear in his employees.

This comportment creates a toxic environment in which no one will feel pleased to work, that’s why every person must consider himself equal to others and his employer as well as the colleagues have the responsibility to make him feel accepted, not judge, able and up to do anything. An employer should organize some events where he meets each one of his employees to discuss any topic, from work to personal life, so everyone can have the opportunity to have a sort of psychological support and to make requests for having a better and happier work environment.
